Bio

To Margaret Spence, the ability to conquer fear and take the leap into the unknown is the number one barrier to creating the life you want. As such, she has spent her career living by the motto imprinted in the footnote of her website, “the journey of a million miles begins with a single step.”

Her journey has been monumental at every step. As the founder and CEO of C. Douglas & Associates, Inc., Margaret built her business from the ground up. Her business started with a simple idea, there has to be more to injury management than sitting at an adjusters’ desk. Today, C. Douglas & Associates manages $95 million dollars in workers’ compensation claims for multinational corporations across the country. Her results are astounding and her clients are raving evangelist to her innovative approach to reducing litigation and closing the people to process gap.

In addition to running her own corporation, Margaret has been involved in the Society for Human Resources Managements (SHRM) Special Expertise Panel serving a six-year term on both the Health Safety and Security Panel and the Employee Disciplines Panel. She was an item writer for the SPHR/PHR exam and serves as a continuing education provider for HRCI recertification credits. Margaret was also a contributor to the SHRM Workplace Forecast, highlighting trends that keep Chief HR Officers (CHRO) up at night. She is frequently called on by the SHRM Press Team to discuss trends in HR with leading publications.

As a laser-focused CEO for over 17 years, Margaret has used innovation and leading edge principles to compete with some of the largest brands in the insurance sector – winning where her competitors failed. Margaret has written two groundbreaking books on linking HR with Workers’ Compensation best practices – Changing the Paradigm From Workers’ Comp Claimant to Valued Employee and The Injury Management Challenge. She founded The National Return to Work Week and currently co-chairs the Return to Work Section of the Workers’ Compensation Institutes’ Annual Conference.

Seventeen years of consulting with major corporations across all sectors revealed one glaring fact, there is a severe lack of senior leadership diversity and sponsorship pipelines for women and minorities. This sparked a new passion for Margaret that resulted in the launch of The Employee to CEO Project, a community built around empowering women of color to step up and into C-Suite leadership roles. In Margaret’s new book – Arriving at the CEO Door, written for every woman who yearns to be in a senior leadership role but finds the career guidepost continually shifting, she shares the life-changing lessons she learned from the employee desk to the CEO chair.

Margaret is a recognized thought leader and top-rated keynote speaker on mentorship, women in leadership, and workers’ compensation. Her keynotes are focused on not only inspiring audiences, but also sharing actionable strategies to drive bottom-line results and meaningful outcomes. Margaret is often quoted in leading publications like The Washington Post, Time, The Business Journal, NPR, and Crain’s.

Margaret is on a mission to help organizations disrupt the human capital equation and to help women unleash their creativity and maximize their full potential by occupying C-Suite Leadership positions. Besides all of this, she is mom to two wonderful sons and the owner of a super sweet rescued Yorkie.
